Ducks are found all around New Zealand, and there are many different species. They are very vocal birds, generally always seen in pairs
They nests pretty much anywhere near water that has overhead protection - logs, holes in the ground or riverbanks, crevices or sheds. They raise one batch per year which usually consists of around 10 eggs.
Ducks mainly eat grass, clover weeds invertebrates and bread, but also crops such as peas and grain.
They are considered pests due to the large quantities of crops and grain that they eat. They also transmit diseases. Viruses can live in a duck for up to 4 weeks.
